Michael Philip Hughes

October 25, 1939 - March 13, 2024

Tribute

Mike emigrated to Canada in Spring of 1957 with his parents Joan and Philip Hughes and sisters, Wendy and Shirley.  Upon arriving in Vancouver, Mike started work immediately with the Royal Bank. He had been hired in England.  In 1966, Mike and his young family were transferred to Montreal, where with another colleague, he helped set up the first main frame computers for the Royal Bank.  He excelled in mathematics and computers.  After leaving the Royal Bank, and returning to Vancouver, he worked for Hudson’s Bay, B.C. Rail, Macmillan Bloedel and ended his computer career as the data processing manager for Weiser Lock in Burnaby.  He then transferred his business knowledge to a different career in the automotive industry, owning and operating 2 Minit-Tune & Brake franchises, one on Scott Road in Surrey and one in Maple Ridge.  During his automotive career he helped many, many people, friends, family, single parents and pensioners.
Mike was President of the Royal City Soccer Club in New Westminster for many years.  He truly loved the game of soccer and both played and refereed soccer until the year 2000 when he tore his achilles tendon.  He learned soccer as a child in England and brought his knowledge and prowess to Canada.  He made several trips (approximately 23) back to England to visit his family and childhood friends.
Mike and his second wife, Beverly, shared a true love for animals and they had many over the years, dogs, cats and horses.  As each one passed they would cry together.  Any animal adopted by Mike enjoyed a truly wonderful life.
Mike was a strong, confident man.  An alpha male who cared deeply about his family and supported us unconditionally.
Mike was predeceased by his parents Joan and Phil, his beloved youngest sister Shirley and much loved grandson, Kenny Lalonde..  Mike is survived by his wife of 41 years, Beverly and sister Wendy (Bob) and his children, Christine (Andrew), Shalyn (Chris), Devyn, Suzanne (Paul), Elaine (Sean), Greg (Farah).  Also survived by grandchildren, Sean, Alison, Hunter, Jordyn, Ethan, Peyton, Jack, Georgia, Matthew, Nick, Julianne, Isaac and Aaron, 4 great-grandchildren, Summer, Ethan, Isobel, and Lou. Mike will be remembered fondly by his life-long friend, James Brown and wife Louise in England, cousin Margot and family also in England, and his friends of 68 years, Jim and Iris McFarland.  Beverly and Christine were at his bedside when he passed.
Dementia took Mike from me and it is with a broken heart, I say “Good night sweet Prince”.
