Mary Hamm (Derksen)
November 1, 1930 - January 24, 2025
Tribute
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our loving mother, Mary Hamm, at the age of 94. Mary was born in Yarrow, BC, to Cornelius and Susan (Thiessen) Derksen.
Mary left school early to help her mother care for her siblings, often assisting her father with his businesses. She married Hank Hamm in 1948 and was actively involved in supporting her husband and their four children. A loyal and hard worker, she spent ten years at Willows Poultry. After Willows closed, she worked as a letter carrier until her retirement in 1990, at the age of 60.
Mary was actively involved in many sports, both as a participant and as a coach. She enjoyed dancing, playing games, camping, boating and water skiing. After her divorce in 1982, she built a pool in her backyard to spend time with her children and grandchildren.
A devoted follower of Jesus, Mary shared her faith and served by teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, and assisting with the singles ministry.
In retirement, she continued her long-time volunteer work at MCC, traveled the world, curled twice a week, completed many puzzles, and enjoyed watching her soap operas on TV.
Mary was predeceased by her ex-husband Hank Hamm, three sons-in-law and all but one of her nine siblings. She leaves behind her son Jim Hamm, daughters Barbara Hill, Betty Ann Salloway, and Marilyn Motut, along with six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Jake Derksen and sister-in-law Velma (Abe) Derksen.
A memorial for Mary will take place this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the MCC relief fund.

This announcement was shared with me. It brought back so many childhood memories for me of so I consider my aunt I remember her so well. A strong woman. I am so pleased to read that she lived such a long life. I have not been in contact for many many years but being a part of the Derksen family for nearly 20 years left me with many memories. Some of them were at her house. It always seemed like a fun home she created. I want to send her family my deepest condolences. My thoughts are with you all.
