Herman Reinke Abbas

August 26, 1935 - April 25, 2024

Tribute

Herman was called home to be with Jesus on April 25th, 2024.  He was born on August 26, 1935  in the Rural Municipality of Ochre River, Manitoba,  the second of five children born to Gerd and Martha (Meyerhoff) Abbas and suffered brain damage at birth.
Herman enjoyed life on the farm, especially the animals…horses, cows, dogs, cats and chickens.  We had great neighbours and there was always a lot of activity. In 1956 the family left Manitoba and settled on a small dairy farm in north Mount Lehman; now the Tuscan Lavender Farm.  This was an ideal place for Herman, again he had his beloved animals and some really great neighbours.
In 1960 Herman had a severe stroke which left him paralyzed and unable to speak.  He persevered, and with help and encouragement regained his ability to walk and some speech.
In 1966 Mom and Dad decided it was time to retire and had a house built in Clearbrook.  Sometime after they had moved to Clearbrook, Herman, with the help of a kind social worker, was encouraged to attend a day program at Wildwood Training Centre which was located where the High Street Shopping Centre is now located.
He enjoyed riding independently, on a special bus and making many new friends.  MCC Supportive Care Services, now known as Communitas, was established and Herman was encouraged to move to Twin Firs, a group home nestled in a lovely wooded area south of Abbotsford. Finally there was a place for him that Mom and Dad trusted.  Since that time, the early 1980’s, Herman has been in care.  In each, of several, homes he was given loving, professional care!  He also enjoyed the Day Program in which he made many friends.  He had a great memory for names and dates…especially birthdays. He loved the Canucks and would be quite excited to know they’re doing well this season!
While he was still able, before Covid, he loved attending church services and over the years, many pastors and Communitas staff have had a part in his spiritual growth.  We thank each and every one of you!
There will be a graveside service at Hazelwood Cemetery on May 11 at 11:00, followed by a lunch at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 33911 Hazelwood Ave. Abbotsford.’
