Henrietta (Sue) van de Lagemaat (Bouma)

December 24, 1935 - September 6, 2023

Tribute

With sorrow we announce the passing away of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and sister-in-law Mrs Henrietta (Sue) van de Lagemaat (nee Bouma), who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at the age of 87 years in Chilliwack. She was born December 24, 1935 in Agawam, Montana, USA and, growing up as one of 11 competitive siblings in Choteau, Montana, peeled many buckets of potatoes and washed many dishes, also working hard at harvesting and other farm chores. She learned to stick up for herself by expressing her opinions strongly, a trait she retained for life. After eventually working as a dental assistant, she immigrated to Canada in 1962, and found a job at the Municipal Hall in Chilliwack, working there for eight years. After a providential disappointment, a trip to Vancouver Island to visit friends led to the big surprise of meeting her beloved husband, Wulfert, on September 1, 1969. She married him exactly one year later. Her love and life were focused on her family, seeking to teach her children to seek God while they were young. She sold classic Christian books for 16 years while her children were young, which brought her into contact with a huge diversity of people, from pastors and teachers to the occasional recovering drug addicts and a man who had been converted from a life of organised crime. She loved people and liked to see her children involved in good, healthy activities. As she got older and weaker and some aspects of her memories became less reliable, her love of human contact remained, making visits the light of her life. She was predeceased by Wulfert and her siblings and in-laws Peter (Nellie), Herman (Madelyn), Henry (Paula), Andrew (Marie), Ann (Huigh) Greyn, John (Edith), as well as her sister-in-law Corrie Cyr. She is survived by her sons Ted (Gwen) and Dan (Ruth) of Chilliwack and Louie (Marjory) of Scotland, six grandchildren, and siblings Harold (Jo), Ralph (Cornelia), Jennie (John) Luteyn and Frances (Larry) Teunissen, and in-laws Martin (Esther) Lagemaat, John (Ina) Lagemaat and Lionel Cyr.

Condolences will be held Wednesday, September 13 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm in the foyer of the Bethel Netherlands Reformed Church, with funeral to follow on Friday, September 15 at 10:00 am, again in the Bethel Netherlands Reformed Church, Chilliwack.

We were blessed to have known Henrietta at our dental office and I had the privilege of providing services to her. She had wonderful stories and cared very much about her health and her family. She had a beautiful smile to match her beautiful soul. Although her body became fragile, she retained her strong spirit and was a wonderful example of faith in her God. I know she has gone ahead and enjoys being in the presence of her Lord and is waiting patiently to help us when we arrive. We extend prayers for peace and comfort to her family and friends as they mourn.
