Alma Wiebe (Gerbrandt)

August 25, 1929 - June 27, 2014

Tribute

Alma Katherine (Gerbrandt) Wiebe went Home to be with Her Lord and Saviour on Friday, June 27, 2014, in Abbotsford B.C.  Alma was born on August 25, 1929, the third child of five, to Cornelius and Tina Gerbrandt.  She was raised in the small two- elevator town of Lowe Farm, Manitoba.  In 1944 the family moved to Mission City, B.C.

Her teen years were spent in school and working at several cafés and the Eaton’s store in downtown Mission.  She was baptized upon the confession of her faith in 1948 at United Mennonite Church in Mission.  On June 30, 1950 Alma married her sweetheart, Isaac Wiebe.

Alma was no stranger to death; her father and two brothers drowned in a tragic boating accident in March 1955.  Her mother passed away in 1986.

Ike and Alma had 4 children, Robert, Patricia, Denise and Karen.  They lovingly cared for many foster babies and chose two daughters to join the family, Melissa and Michele. Sadly, Robert and Patricia both died as the result of accidents; Pat in 1971 and Bob in 2010.

Alma treasured her legacy of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved her role as a wife, mother and homemaker.  Alma was very involved in the ladies sewing circle at her church.  Many children around the world have been blessed by a blanket that she had a hand in making.  She was an avid quilter, crafter and seamstress and later in life took pleasure in spending time with her grandkids and volunteering at The Cottage Thrift Store.  Ike and Alma enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling the world.

She leaves behind, her devoted husband of 64 years, Ike Wiebe; daughters (Jean Wiebe), Denise (Carl) Huber, Karyn (Vern) Friesen, Melissa Hyland and Michele Carpenter (Richard); 11 grandchildren,  Jason (Pamela), Gabriel (Amanda), Joel (Amy), Brandon (Devan), Jennifer (Chris), Jessica (Chris), Joshua, Elizabeth (Iswalh), Richard, Nico and Quinn; 17 great grandchildren; brother Johnny (Lorraine); sister Darlene (Brian); numerous relatives and friends.

Thank you to the Menno Hospital staff for the excellent palliative care Alma received this past week. The Memorial Service will take place Saturday July 5, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Cedar Valley Mennonite Church in Mission with Pastor Dan Rempel officiating.

Alma loved her Saviour, Jesus Christ and found comfort in scripture and prayer. She had many favorite passages that she had memorized throughout her life.  Proverbs 3: 5, 6 and Psalm 23 were very special to her. See you in Heaven!

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
