Susan Epp

December 23, 1924 - December 13, 2013

Tribute

Susan Eva Epp passed away peacefully on 13 December 2013. She was born to Jacob G. and Elisabeth (Paetkau) Epp on 23 December 1924 in Rosenbach, Ukraine. The Epp family emigrated to Canada in 1926 when Susan was in her first year.

After a brief stay in Waldheim, Saskatchewan the Epps  were among the first Mennonite settlers in Yarrow, BC, arriving on 21 February 1928. They soon established a thriving farm where the family of 9 children was raised . Susan's parents were charter members of the Yarrow MB Church when it was organized in 1929.

Susan attended the Yarrow Elementary School, following which she completed 4 years of studies in the Elim Bible School in Yarrow. When in 1945 she moved to Vancouver, Susan completed her high school through the Sure Pass Programme.

Susan was baptised in the Yarrow MB Church by Rev. Johannes Harder on 26 October 1940, when she was 16 years of age.  In Vancouver, she became a member of the 43rd Avenue MB Church, and later, when the Fraserview MB Church was organised in the mid 1950s, Susan transferred her membership here.

For 26 years Susan was employed in the Vancouver City Hall. In 1984 she retired to Abbotsford, where the Central Heights Church became her spiritual home. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her friends. She was an avid reader, including her Bible which she read through several times.

For the last two years of her life, Susan lived at Primrose Garden, Menno Place. Each time she returned from an outing she would say, “Home Sweet Home.” She felt cared for and appreciated by staff and residents in this seniors home.

Susan leaves to mourn her sister Helen Schellenberg, two sisters-in-law, Lucy Epp and Hilda Epp, and many nephews and nieces. A service in memory of Susan will be held at 10:00 am, on Saturday, December 21st, in the Menno Chapel.

The family wishes to acknowledge the thoughtful care given to Susan by the ARH  medical staff during her hospitalization.
