Helga Gesine Loewen (de Buhr)

Helga Loewen (nee de Buhr), 88, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2023 at Menno Hospital. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Helga was born on March 2, 1935 in Benstreek Germany. In May 1951, when she was 16 years old, she immigrated with her family from Germany to Manitoba and then later to Vancouver. She married Abe Loewen June 20, 1959 and they were blessed with four daughters. They settled in Clayburn (Abbotsford) on a small dairy farm and then in 1968 they moved to flatter farming land in Arnold, Sumas Prairie. Together they worked hard on their dairy farm. They retired and in spring of 2002 they moved closer to amenities in Abbotsford.
Helga is survived by her daughters Marlene (Sherman) Foster, Hildi (Colin) Mitchell, Elsie (Ron) Rempel, and son-in-law Kelvin Pierson. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren Lane Foster, Alexie (Joey Fenwick) Foster, Colby Foster, Christian (Mia) Mitchell, Alyssa (Michael)) Gerth, Caleigh Mitchell, Chad Rempel, Ryan (Dina) Rempel, Elise (Jonathan) Jones, Chantel (Joel) Peters, Mariah Pierson, and Kyle Pierson. Helga was also graciously blessed with 3 great grandchildren Hailey and Desmond Jones, and Calem Gerth. As well, she is survived by her sisters Gerda de Buhr, Tillie (Rolf) Mueller, and Edith (Hartmut) Berger, and sister-in-law Elaine de Buhr. Helga is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Abe, daughter Rosalie Pierson (Kelvin), brothers John and Helmut de Buhr, and parents Frieda and Hermann de Buhr.
Helga prioritized attending church and having quiet time sitting in her rocking chair with her Daily Bread devotional and her Bible. She was hard working and ready to help whenever there was a need. Her grandchildren fondly remember her heart-shaped waffles and her fabulous apple pie! Mom/grandma has blessed us with unconditional love and the memories we will cherish forever. Auf Wiedersehen!
The graveside service will be held Friday, August 11 at 10:00 A.M. at Maclure Mennonite Cemetery and the Service of Remembrance will follow at 11:30 A.M. at Arnold Community Church, 310 Arnold Road, Abbotsford, followed by refreshments.
