Gisela Ruth Effertz (Fleischer)

February 18, 1934 - July 19, 2024

Tribute

Gisela Ruth Effertz left our earth peacefully July 19, 2024.  She is predeceased by her husband Gunter; brother Rudy; sister Erika; adoptive sister Anita; sisters-in-law Annemie and Elizabeth; and brother-in-law Josef.  Gisela is survived by her son Rolf (Vicki) of White Rock; grandsons Nathan (Sarah) and Adam (Kajsa) both of Victoria; her Cologne, Germany family Eleanor, Hubert and Dieter (Connie); and daughter in Vancouver S (D); grandchildren (C/J).  Special memories on her behalf to extended Germany family and significant others, Wolfgang, Monika, Bettina and Tina.

Gisela’s life journey began February 18, 1934 in Hirschberg, Germany.  After surviving WW II she met Gunter; they married in the early 1950’s.  Embracing the need for new life opportunities, with young daughter in hand, they embarked on an adventurous 6 week boat trip; emigrating to Australia, settling on the outskirts of Sydney.  In 1975 the family left Australia for Canada; choosing Mission as their new residence.  For many years Gisela was a home and health support professional, caring for some of Mission’s most notable heritage family members.  Upon retirement Gisela and Gunter involved themselves in travel, grandchildren and volunteering with Abbotsford’s Agri-Fair.  She was a dedicated caregiver looking after Gunter until he passed.  In 2010 Gisela moved to White Rock to live out the final years of her life.  She was honest, hardworking and a wonderful cook and hostess.  She will be remembered for being a loving, forgiving, compassionate wife, mother, sister, grandma, Tante and friend to the many who knew her.

Time surpasses yet Gisela’s soul and spirit lives on.  To commemorate and honor her a memorial plaque will be embedded on the White Rock promenade.  A celebration of life will take place in the future.

Grandma,

You and grandad shaped much of my childhood, my personality, and my drive for community service. You cooked more delicious meals than I could ever remember, frequently took me and Adam swimming at the rec center, and kept us entertained on weekends when the parents needed a break from us.

Your laugh and smile will always be engrained into my memory of you along with the welcoming embrace you gave everyone you met and interacted with.

You will never be forgotten and will always be apart of who I am today and will become in the future. I hope you can find grandad now in this life beyond here and spend forever in each other’s wonderful company.

My love forever and always,
– Nathan

I am very grateful to have known Gisela in recent years. Her influence in making my husband (her grandson) the kind and caring person he is was obvious. Gisela will be missed dearly but we will keep her memory alive with us always x

Grandma,

It’s hard to find the right words to express the depth of love and admiration I have for you, but I’ll try. You were, without a doubt, one of the most influential people in my life. From my earliest memories, you were always there—guiding, loving, and creating a sense of home wherever you were.

I have such fond memories of growing up, when you and Grandpa would get my brother and me involved in volunteering at the local Agrifair. Those summer days, working together at the rodeo and rides event, are moments I’ll never forget. You taught us the value of giving back and the joy of helping others, all while making it fun and meaningful.

And then there were the late nights at your house in Mission, surrounded by my entire family, playing cards and laughing together. Your kitchen was always warm with the smell of your cooking—Yorkshire puddings for dinner and pancakes for breakfast. I always ate more than I could possibly remember, savoring every bite. Your food, like your love, was indulgent, generous, and always served with a smile.

The impact you had on me—and on everyone who knew you—is immeasurable. You taught me to value family, to make time for the things that matter, and to approach life with a full heart. The memories of you will live on in every laugh, every card game, every delicious meal, and in the quiet moments where I reflect on all that you gave.

Rest in peace, Grandma. Your love and your lessons will stay with me forever. You were a woman of incredible strength and grace, and I will always carry a piece of you in my heart.

While I didn’t know Gisela for long, I will never forget her spirit. I never saw her miss an opportunity to share in a giggle, a smile or a moment to sneak some dinner to the dog under the table. My partner Adam and I (her grandson) can only hope to emulate that spirit and carry forward some of the joy she brought to our lives. Gisela will be forever loved, and forever missed.
