Tribute

On Sunday September 17, starting at 4 pm, we will be holding a celebration of life for our dear friend Henry Rempel.  Henry has been a friend and supporter of MCC for many years, and about 15 years ago developed a vision for gifting his land and rental property to MCC in a manner similar to an endowment. Through his generosity and vision, millions of the world’s most vulnerable people will receive assistance for their basic needs and empowerment to a sustainable livelihood.

Henry was born in Russia on April 26, 1926, to Wilhelm and Katharina (nee Loewen) Rempel. His brother Jacob was born on May 26, 1929, in Moscow as they were fleeing Russia and his youngest brother Wilhelm Jr was born on March 12, 1934, in Yarrow, BC. On the journey, Henry’s brother Jacob became sick with a brain inflammation that caused permanent brain damage, which required ongoing care. Henry grew up working on the family farm in Yarrow and Chilliwack, and later in his 20’s attended Bible school in Winnipeg and then studied Psychology at UBC. After university Henry worked at Woodlands for many years, caring for people with mental health issues, and then in the 1980’s he started a career in business buying and operating rental property. Henry was married to Mary Semturis, who was a teacher, as well as a lifelong support to Henry in business.

Henry was pre-deceased by his father Wilhelm, mother Katharina, bothers Jacob and Wilhelm, as well as his wife Mary.  Henry is survived by his brother Wilhelm’s sons Eric, Earl, Karl, and Paul, as well as Mary’s sister Kris Stone and her son Darren.

We look forward to stories from Henry’s life, his heart for those who are less fortunate, and his vision to assist the poorest of poor.
